What we handle for law firms

Professional firms need professional ledgers.

Operating clarity—with trust boundaries never blurred.

  • Trust / IOLTA never co-mingledOperating packages center on operating books. Client trust funds stay out of operating P&L—scope for full trust accounting is explicit when needed.
  • Partner draws vs. salaryDraws, guaranteed payments, and W-2 attorney pay entered consistently for partners and associates.
  • Contingent fee timingSettlements and contingent fees coded so cash timing doesn’t invent false monthly profit.
  • Client costs advancedFiling fees, experts, and travel advanced for clients tracked so they don’t silently inflate “expenses.”
  • Retainer vs. earned revenueMoney in the door isn’t always earned yet—retainers becoming fees (and refunds) stay readable.
  • Malpractice & practice-area spendMalpractice premiums and practice-area expense patterns in predictable accounts.
How it usually works / typical pain

Fees look simple until retainers, costs, and trust enter.

Operating vs. trust must stay separate

IOLTA/trust funds are not operating cash. We keep scope explicit so client funds are never casually mixed into operating P&L.

Retainers read as instant profit

Clear treatment of retainers becoming fees—and refunds when matters end—keeps partners from a false profit story.

Client costs hide in expenses

Consistent coding of advanced costs makes reimbursements and matter profitability easier to see.

Uneven partner draws

Partnerships with uneven draws are common. Consistency in the books supports both management and tax prep.

Industry FAQ

Before you get started.

Do you do full IOLTA / trust accounting?

Standard monthly packages focus on operating bookkeeping. Full trust accounting, three-way reconciliations, and bar-compliance packages are a different scope—we’ll say so clearly on an intro call rather than blur the line.

Can you work alongside our practice management billing?

Yes. Billing systems track matters; we keep the firm’s books from banking and the detail you provide so financial statements reflect firm reality.

We’re a partnership with uneven draws—is that okay?

Common. We record activity consistently. Allocation and tax treatment questions are ideal for a CPA intro or Complete planning conversations.

Contingency fee firms—anything special?

Cash timing and case-cost advances matter more. We’ll set categories that keep settlements, fees, and client-cost reimbursements understandable on the monthly statements.

Your clients expect rigor. Your books should too.
